David Neil and ensemble present Life, Times and Music of Louis Armstrong. The ensemble has 6 members playing trumpet, clarinet, two trombone, banjo and tuba performing traditional Dixieland, Blues and Rags. Much of the music is from actual transcriptions of Louie Armstrong’s music from the Hot 5 and Hot 7 recording done in Chicago 1927 to 1929.

BIOS

David Neill- Trombone: Active Bass Trombonists in the Western New England Area and owner of Neill and Neill Insurance Agency. David Neill started Dixieland Stomp in 2009 and has widely performed throughout Western New England. Mr. Neill is the leader of The Premier Brass Quintet as well as The Jazz Bones, Premier Swing Band, Fanfare Brass Choir, The Victorian Quadrille Orchestra, The Happy Five Oompah Band and the Ragtime 5. Over the last 30 years Mr. Neill has performed with many music groups: Gregory Caputo Big, The Steve Lord Big Band and Phil Estabrook Big Band as well as a local appearances with traveling shows.

Edward Mari – Clarinet: Mr. Mari attended New England Conservatory of Music and has Played professionally for 50 years in the Northeastern U.S. and White Nights Jazz Festival in St. Petersburg Russia. From big band jazz to jazz combo plus symphony/pops experience. Have accompanied Ella Fitzgerald, Temptations, Cab Calloway, Lou Rawls, Wayne Newton. Current musical groups: Pair Extraordinaire, Steve Lord Big Band, Bristol (CT) Reunion Jazz Band and freelancing.
Eugene Bartley - Trombone: Eugene Bartley recently retired from a very successful thirty-five year career teaching music in the Westfield (MA) Public Schools. During his tenure in Westfield, Gene’s various ensembles were often recognized for their excellence. Gene has remained active in music education. He has been a guest conductor for MMEA-WD Junior Festivals four times and has adjudicated throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut in both junior and senior individual auditions, and at IAJE junior and senior Jazz Band Festivals. Gene is also the founder and the musical director of the Greater Westfield (Massachusetts) Community Band, a concert band for adults. He also performs in several area concert bands, “Big Band” jazz groups, pit orchestras, brass ensembles, small jazz combos, and as a soloist in many fine restaurants throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts. Gene has performed with national touring acts such as the FOUR TOPS, TEMPTATIONS, and the RINGLING BROTHERS BARNUM AND BAILEY CIRCUS.
Peter Grimaldi – Trumpet: Mr. Grimaldi started his trumpet experience with the Ronnie Drumm Youth Band. Graduated with a BA in Music from Westfield State College and after college joined the band at the Airforce academy in Colorado. Peter is a busy musician playing in the orchestra of various music shows through Western New England as well as teaching at Holyoke Community College. He is also performing with The Jeff Holmes Big Band, The Amherst Jazz Orchestra as well as the Third Millennium Jazz Trio.
William Choe – Tuba: Mr. Choe received both his Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Tuba Performance and his Master of Music in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Will is currently the band director at Westfield Intermediate School. He has also held teaching positions in the Chicopee Public Schools and the Ralph C Mahar Regional School districts. As a trumpet and tuba player, Mr. Choe has performed with many local musicians and groups, including the Primate Fiasco, Salsa Train and Brass Attack of Springfield.
Ron Calabrese – Banjo: Mr. Calabrese has been playing guitar with over 40 years of music experience and has performed with various bands and ensembles throughout the Northeast playing multiple styles of music from rock and pop to jazz and classical. Beyond his MBA, Ron has a B.A. in Music with a major in Music Education and a minor in Jazz. He has also written numerous compositions and has produced and recorded multiple guitar albums. A resident of Broad Brook, CT, Ron is currently a member of multiple diverse groups and ensembles, an active judge for music competitions, and enjoys writing and recording his own compositions and arrangements.
