Ellen Barry portrays Lizzie Borden, the notorious New England spinster tried in 1893 for the hatchet murders of her father and stepmother.

Directed by Kenneth Tigar, this one-woman play starring Ellen Barry will be performed as an Actors’ Equity production in four performances.

The play centers on Lizzie Borden. Ms. Borden takes the spotlight, agreeing to explain for one night only at the Fall River Historical Society exactly what she believes happened on the day of the infamous murders. “As she speaks,” Giannunzio says, “the audience learns a good deal more than she would perhaps like to reveal.”

Bios

Mitch Giannunzio, actor and playwright, is a founding member of First Stage on the West Coast. His play “Last Tag” was made into a Sweepsweeks CBS-TV Movie entitled “Falling For You” starring Jenny Garth. His play “A Smaller Place” was made into a feature film, “The Hiding Place,” starring Kim Hunter and Timothy Bottoms. His most recent acting performances have been in the movies “Perfect Stranger” and ”Burn After Reading,” and in the Tennessee Williams play “I Can’t Imagine Tomorrow.”

Kenneth Tigar, the recipient of a Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle Award for his stage work, has appeared across the country in his one-man show “I Must Be Mr. Boswell” about the biographer of Dr. Johnson. His credits include “Lethal Weapon” movies, “Barney Miller,” “The West Wing,” and “Law and Order.” On stage he has played Willy Loman in “Death of a Salesman,” and he starred in “The Sunshine Boys,” “All My Sons,” and “The Gin Game.” He directed the national tour of “The Gin Game” with Kim Hunter and is a well-known opera director on the West Coast. He was in the company of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway play revival of Brian Friel’s “Translations.”

Ellen Barryhas appeared locally with the New Century Theatre as Martha in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and as Ida in “Mornings at Seven.” She was most recently seen as Katharine in a Workshop Theatre Company production of Terrence McNally’s “A Perfect Ganesh.” She received an Off-Off-Broadway Award for excellence in her role as Ella in Ibsen’s “John Gabriel Borkman” with the Century Center Theatre. Barry was also named Best Leading Actress by Michigan’s Detroit Free Press for her role as Vivian Bearing in “WIT” at the BoarsHead Theatre.

Peter McLean is an artist and Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts at the Hartford Art School/ University of Hartford. He works in a diverse range of media including his striking large-format charcoal drawings which have received much critical attention. Peter McLean’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. He has been the recipient of many awards. His work is included in numerous private and institutional collections including the Institute of Native American Art, Washington.

Presented by the nonprofit North Hall Association in partnership with the Daily Hampshire Gazette and The Republican, the arts festival also includes opera, classical music, country music, jazz, and poetry. Programs are also funded by the arts councils of Blandford, Chester, Huntington, Russell, Worthington.
